Summer in Philadelphia is beginning to heat up, and to be honest hot days with high humidity do not make me happy, rather they tend to make me a bit cranky. This is not so much a confession as it is a realization of what happens when we begin to strip away the comforts of modern life and to look at who we are with greater clarity.
Coming to these realizations about the heat, and being cranky, displays some of the same revelations that come about oneself when we fast, or enter into a time of solitude. It reveals who we are, and at times there are things that come to the surface that we simply do not like.
However, if we never take time to examine what’s under the surface, how will we know what is there? Take time this summer to explore a spiritual discipline, and not just for the sake of exploring a specific discipline, but rather to mature in the likeness of Christ Jesus.
